April and Spring/Summer Have Arrived

I know I’m obsessed with the weather right now, as many of you are. We Angelinos have not experienced such continuous cold, wet weather ever. I’m happy for the drought reduction that has come from this, but the cold has got to go. When I started writing this we were expecting an actual heatwave, with temperatures in the 80s. Well, that’s been stymied. Now it’s only going to be in the 70s. Ho hum. Let’s talk art. There’s a lot coming up with show season getting into full swing. And of course, please wander over to Poet’s Place and check out Linda’s new selection of poetry.

Towards the end of the month we will gather for The Brewery Art Walk, over in Lincoln Heights. Two days of open studios that you tour yourselves. Come to The Jesus Wall Gallery where I’ll be showing art along with my most artistic friends. Learn more by visiting their info page.

March is Here. So Why is it So Cold?!

In all my years in Los Angeles, I have never experienced the weather like what we are going through right now. Where is our February heat wave? Snow?! Yikes. Meanwhile, the art world keeps spinning. We just completed LA’s art fair season.Which fairs did you attend? Did you have any favorite art. I know I did. I’ll let you see what I loved at the LA Art Show.

There’s a New Gallery in Hyde Park for Glass

Hyde Park Gallery LA is opening its doors for the first time on March 4th, with a Grand Opening Exhibition of the renowned glass artist Nao Yamamoto who appears on the “Blown Away” Series Season 2 on Netflix. The gallery, located at 2618 W Florence Ave, LA, CA 90043, will focus on the burgeoning art glass market, and will be the only gallery dedicated to this genre in Los Angeles. The gallery was created by artist/designer Scott Slagerman who is an integral part of the current Los Angeles glass scene. Scott grew up in Los Angeles and studied glass and art during the late 70’s and 80’s when the American Glass Movement was just taking off. He then spent almost 20 years living and working in France as a glass artist and designer. He was won numerous awards for his unique work in this medium, with a piece in the permanent collection of the “Musee des Arts Decocrative” in Paris.

“When I think about LA, the first things that come to mind are palm trees, beaches, and Hollywood, not glassblowing! However, there is a history of glass in Los Angeles and a current glass scene that has grown considerably in the last 10 years. Most people in LA have no idea that this glass scene even exists, and it really deserves to be talked about, especially now that it has matured to this level. Our plan is to help people rediscover this under-represented and under-appreciated art form.”

Hyde Park Gallery was created to showcase this local glass scene and offer a platform for both established and emerging glass artists. Currently in LA there are no other galleries that represent glass art as their focal point. During the 80’s and 90’s there were several glass galleries, the Kurland-Summers Gallery being the most prominent, however none are still in operation. Slagerman is determined to bring the best of this medium back to the forefront, sharing the beauty and complexity of glass art with the local community. His gallery will host artist receptions, art talks, special opening weekends, and tours of his expansive glass studio, as he wants the community to experience what’s going on around them behind closed doors and learn about the complexity of art glass creation.

Celebrity artist Nao Yamamoto was born in Japan and has been building her artistic practice in the United States since 2011. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Design from California State University, San Bernardino in 2014, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 2011, specializing in glass art. Nao creates artwork inspired by the simple beauty of glass and nature, to celebrate the power of life. The second exhibit will feature the organic combination of wood with blown glass, a signature style and process of gallery owner Slagerman.

Oliver Nowlin's First Solo Show at MONA 

MONA is proud to announce Oliver Nowlin: Lightning’s Lung, on display February 24, 2022 through August 27th, 2023. The opening will take place from 6-8pm on Saturday, March 4th and is free to the public. 

Nowlin’s wall-based sculptures convey stories from his life abstracted through geometric forms, texture, color, mark-making, and light. He also integrates and transforms found objects into his work  (cardboard packaging and beer can decals) through sculptural and painterly interventions.

LA Art Show Welcomes Actor, Singer Ashley Tisdale as Celebrity Host for Opening Night Premiere Benefiting St. Jude

The LA Art Show is thrilled that Ashley Tisdale, known for her singing, acting and beauty brand and interior design ventures, will be our celebrity host for the Opening Night Premiere Party benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Wednesday, February 15. 

Tisdale rose to fame in 2006 as Sharpay Evans in the Disney Channel original movie High School Musical. The musical drama spawned two sequels and the 2011 spin-off, Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure. In 2007, Tisdale released her debut album, Headstrong, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.

She also starred on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody series and the animated show Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch, for which she earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2014.

In 2013, Tisdale announced work on her third studio album, releasing the promotional single "You're Always Here," and starred in the horror comedy film Scary Movie 5. She continued to appear in television roles, joining the main cast of Clipped (2015). She served as executive producer of the ABC Family television series Young & Hungry (2014–2018). In 2018, Tisdale returned to music with the release of the singles "Voices in My Head" and "Love Me & Let Me Go." Her third studio album and first in a decade, Symptoms, was released in 2019. Recently, Tisdale starred as Jenny Kenney in the CBS sitcom Carol's Second Act (2019–2020) and served as a panelist on the reality competition show The Masked Dancer.

In 2020, Tisdale founded, authored and curated the lifestyle blog and website, Frenshe, a community-based platform promoting wellness, health and self-care, which led to the launch of her skin-care/wellness/self-care line, Being Frensche. Tisdale has since launched Frensche Interiors, an interior design company.    

She first became involved with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2013 when she visited the hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.  Since then, she has participated in various campaigns such as St. Jude Walk/Run Los Angeles in 2016, Take 5 Together during the pandemic, 30 Days of CCAM – Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Thanks & Giving for St. Jude, and donated a portion of the proceeds from her song “You’re Always Here” to the hospital.

MRG Fine Art presents The Artists Collective at the LA Art Show 2023

SHIKI: THE FOUR SEASONS IN JAPANESE ART BRINGS THE BEAUTY AND HARMONY OF THE SEASONS TO A NEW EXHIBITION AT THE STURT HAAGA GALLERY IN DESCANSO GARDENS

In California, the seasons are subtle. So subtle, in fact, that some claim there are none at all. Just as subtle, and equally beautiful, are the exquisite designs of the seasons in Japanese art. Over centuries, a rich literary and visual vocabulary representing the seasons evolved from the aesthetic sensibilities of the Japanese people. SHIKI: The Four Seasons in Japanese Art, a new exhibition at the Sturt Haaga Gallery brings this beauty and harmony to Descanso Gardens from February 18 – May 21, 2023.

The Crenshaw Dairy Mart Gallery Launches New Limited Edition Bag Line The North Star: Healing Generations which Focuses on Movement to Free Black Women

Patrisse Cullors Serves as Creative Director, in Collaboration with Rita Nazareno of ZACARIAS 1925, and Formerly Incarcerated Black Literary Nissi Berry

Just in time for Frieze LA and Black History Month, artist collective and art gallery Crenshaw Dairy Mart, co-founded by Patrisse Cullors, Alexandre Dorriz and Noé Olivas, launch their latest creative endeavor, The North Star bag line, along with Rita Nazareno, Creative Director of ZACARIAS 1925. The hand-woven line focuses on the movement to free Black women from incarceration. Black women are currently the fastest-growing population being incarcerated. Black women make up 13% of the country’s population but disproportionately represent 44% of women in jail, and 30% of the women’s prison population. Opposed to incarcerated Black men, Black women entering the prison system are frequently left unsupported and isolated. The new line, featuring a poem from previously incarcerated Black literary Nissi Berry, aims to support women in a way the system has not. Profits from each bag sold go directly to the movement to end the incarceration of Black women and put money back into the pockets of previously incarcerated Black female artists. This design of The North Star bag line is inspired by quilts made by enslaved Africans that were crafted to help lead them to freedom while navigating the Underground Railroad. According to “quilt code theory”, designs such as "wagon wheel," "tumbling blocks," and "bear's paw" were secret messages hidden in quilt patterns that helped direct enslaved Africans to freedom.

LA Art Show Welcomes a Spectacular Line-up of 120+ Prestigious Exhibitors for 2023 Edition

We’re excited to host an outstanding roster of more than 120 exhibiting galleries from North America and around the world when we return to the LA County Convention Center February 15 to 19. The Show’s 2023 edition will include both European and Japanese Pavilions and the fair's largest contingent of Korean galleries to date. “This year we have the largest global presence we’ve ever had,” said LA Art Show producer / director Kassandra Voyagis. “One of the most powerful aspects about art is its ability to bring people together and ignite transformative conversations. We’re thrilled that our vast international presence this year ensures conversations that are both expansive and inclusive.”

We’re also pleased to present the 2023 edition of DIVERSEartLA curated by Marisa Caichiolo. The LA Art Show’s cutting-edge exhibition platform will feature collaborative installations by international museums and art organizations with a focus on the global climate crisis. 

The 5-day event kicks off with a star-studded Opening Night Premiere featuring a secret celebrity host, complimentary hors d'oeuvres and beverages – a benefit for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®. Fifteen percent of all fair ticket proceeds will benefit St. Jude.

At this point in my life I really wish Christmas was like the Olympics, every four years. Something to get excited about because it was a year away, or two, or three. I know this sounds rather “bah humbug” of me, but that’s because I feel this is inflicted on us every year whether we like it or not and I’m sick of it. There. Got that off of my chest.

Of course over at The Makery we are filled with holiday cheer and want to share that with all of you for First Friday, December 2, where we’ll be decorating ornaments and stuff like that. We’re expecting a good time for all. Please stop by.

LA Art Show — LA’s largest and longest-running art fair returning to LA Convention Center on Feb 15-19

• DIVERSEartLA 2023, which began in 2015 and is curated by Marisa Caichiolo, connects important art institutions to generate thoughtful dialogue through art and will encourage visitors to confront the complex challenges of our global climate crisis and imagine potential solutions. Marisa Caichiolo expresses: "Humans are changing the Earth’s natural systems in rapid and unprecedented ways. This has propelled our planet into a new geologic era: the Anthropocene. Contextualizing the issues through immersive experiences and installations seeks to deepen our understanding and inspire solutions.”

Two of DIVERSEartLA’s 2023 participating institutions that we are currently highlighting are:

• The Washington D.C. based Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) returns with a curatorial proposal from Fabian Goncalves who will present an immersive experience, featuring one of Mexico’s most prominent contemporary conceptual photographers, Alfredo De Stefano. Often employing ice, fire, and light, De Stefano creates enigmatic installations with both natural and man-made objects in an ethereal desert setting. With his evocative figures wrapped in blood-red cloth, long shadows under a hot sun and scorched shrubbery, De Stefano’s work seems to argue, through fantastic visions that foretell Earth’s transformation into a desert planet, that this is the result of man-made global warming and widespread drought.
• The Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles are participating for the first time and will present a collaboration between Italian artists Pietro Ruffo and Elia Pellegrini along with creative production studio Noruwei. “Il Giardino Planetario” will be an immersive experience and video installation that is an allegory of the planet as a garden.

November...Scorpio Season.

Welcome to Scorpio season…it’s my birthday, and many of my friends and collegue’s birthdays as well. So you all have to put up with us. Ha! So, some of you may know the studio I am in, The Makery was effected by a fire in the neighboring building. We sustained some water damage but we’ll be fine. I look forward to the demolition of the burnt carcass of a building. Onward!

We’ve got November poetry over at Poet’s Place. I can always count on Linda to provide us with a fine variety of poems. Enjoy! What else is going on this month? Things to do for Halloween and Día de los Muertos!

Born in 1972 in Oaxaca, Cruz Alejandro has always had a passion for art and painting. Cruz’s art style embraces both aspects of realism and surrealism, oftentimes painting front views of walls with windows and doors that are deteriorating with time. For this, he has been known to describe his genre of painting as “Poética del Abandono,” roughly translated to “Poetry of Abandonment”. This year, in commemoration of Day of the Dead, a collection of ten paintings from his exhibition “Del Personaje al Hueso” (From Character to Bone) is on display at Mercado La Paloma from October to November.

Welcome to the real start of summer. We have been fortunate to have had a rather mild summer, up to now. Remember to hydrate folks, hydrate. And go to air conditioned galleries and museums. That sounds like an excellent idea.

I’d tell you about First Friday coming up at The Makery, my studio in Little Tokyo, but we did that tonight. There was collage and it was super fun. I think there will pictures over at The Makery web site soon. Our next show over at The Makery (how many times can I say…in the same paragraph?), is Dulcepalooza curated and instigated by Dulce Stein. The opening for that is September 10, from 6-10pm. 55 artists will be represented, myself included.

Bob Landström, known for his abstract, metaphysical paintings made from crushed, pigmented igneous rock, makes his debut in Los Angeles at bG Gallery with his new solo exhibition, Multiverse.

Multiverse includes several new works from Landström and is as much an investigation into his personal fascination with metaphysics and theories about multiple universes as it is a wide-sweeping exploration into the ways we perceive reality and create meaning.

Happy July!! Keep it Safe and Sane...Sane, Hahaha!!

You can hear the fireworks in the distance. It’s that season again. Summer. And who would have thought that for the 4th of July women would have to deal with the reversal of Roe v Wade. We’ve had rights taken away. this is not a time to celebrate. No, it’s time to get angry. Create the change we need. Artists know what to do. Get busy. Get marching. Get to calling your representatives. Hey Jimmy Gomez! Can you hear us? Codify Roe v Wade. Get rid of the filibuster. Impeach lying Supreme Court judges. Simple requests. Anyway, here we are. What’s next? Good question. But in the meantime we do need to keep stimulated and inspired, and the best way to do that is to go see art. Or read some poetry. Check out Linda’s poets over at Poet’s Place.

THE WEST COAST THEATRICAL DEBUT OF ART DOCUMENTARY MAKE ME
FAMOUS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE 40TH ANNUAL OUTFEST FILM
FESTIVAL.

The 40th Annual Outfest Film Festival will present the West Coast Theatrical Premiere of feature documentary, MAKE ME FAMOUS, a fresh look at the iconic Downtown art scene in NYC in the 1980s.

MAKE ME FAMOUS brings forward a popular era while unearthing many artists, photographers, and stories that have seldom been in the public eye. The 1980s art scene is famous for breakout artists like Basquiat and Keith Haring, but there were many other artists who made a powerful impact. Set during arguably the last great art explosion in American history, MAKE ME FAMOUS tells the story of painter Edward Brezinski in his maniacal quest for fame. Told by the artists and gallery owners themselves, MAKE ME FAMOUS gives an intimate portrait of what it was like to be an artist in NYC in the 1980s, with an unexpected twist at the end when you find out what happened with Brezinski’s mysterious death in the Côte d’Azur. This feature art documentary delves into the spirit of the artists themselves, what drove their generation and what they were up against.

Dates and Times: Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 2PM Director Brian Vincent and Producer Heather Spore will be in attendance for a Q&A following the Harmony Gold screening. Tickets are on sale through www.outfest.org, and single tickets can be purchased for $14. Films are available for streaming after their Theatrical Screening.

La Brea Tar Pits Announces Summer Programming
that Celebrates Museum’s First Confirmed Fossil

WHAT

Through Labor Day, visitors can enjoy special programming at La Brea Tar Pits that celebrates one of the Ice Age’s mightiest predators: the saber-toothed cat. This summer, visitors can experience fantastic tours and programs, witness the Ice Age coming to life in Ice Age Encounters performances, help scientists with their discoveries, and engage in specially guided tours.

As the first confirmed fossil found at La Brea Tar Pits, saber-toothed cats are iconic symbols of Ice Age Los Angeles and California as a whole. In 1974, the saber-toothed cat was officially designated as our state fossil. Just like L.A., saber-toothed cats have killer vibes. This powerful predator is captured perfectly in its scientific name, Smilodon fatalis, coming from the Greek smilodon for “blade” and “tooth”, and the Latin fatalis for “deadly.”

A self-guided scavenger hunt with La Brea Tar Pits’ Saber-tooth highlights is the purrfect starting place.

Downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) is proud to announce their next major solo show In Our Nature, featuring new works from Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta and set to premiere June 25th in Gallery 3.

One of the leading figures of Japan’s up-and-coming generation of artists, Kaneta will be making her U.S. solo debut with her upcoming show at CHG, which features 14 new works. The Tokyo-based artist paints according to ancient Japanese philosophies, including the thought that God dwells in all beings. Her descriptive paintings are embedded in historic cultures yet exist as fleeting spectacles of nature. The artist applies acrylic paint to canvas and masterfully blends to create an image that actively develops and moves with cyclicality. Her artworks suggest a passing of time and celebrate nature’s ephemerality.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed "Arts and Health Week" in Los Angeles County, from June 13 through June 18, 2022. The Board’s motion states: "From arts education for young people to arts programming for older adults, the arts have been proven to make individual lives better and strengthen communities. They improve health and well-being, and they improve cognitive skills. There is growing research and proven connections demonstrating that arts can make a positive impact on health across mental health, physical health, and public health, for all communities." The motion further recognizes LA County’s work at the intersection of arts and health, including LA Opera, and the County’s Departments of Arts and Culture, Mental Health, Public Health, and Health Services, and other partners.

Los Angeles, CA (June 10, 2022) — Calling all video makers and Tar Pits enthusiasts! This summer is your opportunity to have your short video screened outdoors in the heart of Los Angeles during the Fossilized and Realized: Tar Pits Video Festival, happening on July 22, 2022.

Write a script for your dire wolf puppet, choreograph a tar dance, create a montage of all your favorite tar pits-inspired movie scenes, or whatever else comes to mind to show us why this site is special to you, to Los Angeles, and to the world.

Videos chosen can qualify to win a sabertooth cat scull cast awarded for Favorite Video. The videos (one-minute or less) can be animated, live-action, shot on your cell phone– and they don't need to be filmed at Hancock Park. International submissions are welcome.

It’s time to mobilize. Women’s rights are dear to me. We are seeing the disregard and disrespect for women in this nation. We cannot allow 5 individuals to reak havok on the lives of women across this country. We in California are fortunate to have a safe haven for those in need of reproductive healthcare, but when you see the maps of the regions where women will loose control of their bodies, it’s heartbreaking. I’m not sure the Republicans have any idea of what they are unleashing. I know this is the red line I draw in the sand and I will protest, volunteer, contribute to make sure that those responsible for doing this to 51% of the population, need to be removed from their jobs. May at AMOCA

New exhibition and a new podcast!

April was a remarkably busy month at AMOCA, and May is shaping up to be just as vibrant: a new exhibition featuring work by Alina Hayes opens in the Vault Gallery, a podcast launches featuring AMOCA's very own Exhibition Manager Pam Aliaga, the Huntington celebrates Fiber Arts Month, and more classes and workshops in the ceramics studio have been posted!
