October - Poet's Place

POETS PLACE
OCTOBER EDITION 2026

Exciting times we are living in! October marks the start of the holiday season. Bright lights and frolic await us. The season of the witch or drinking in the brews of Sodom and Gomorrah. Will we be destroyed by the hands of the wickedness of our current Satan’s living in the WH? Will El Nino flood the country destroying all in its wake? Ah what lies (sic) beyond that can tell our future/fortune? Is it written in the Tarot cards thoughtfully written and read aloud, convincingly by the hands of our cult readers and Tarot guru’s? Can we continue to power on in this murky water densely clouded with the crimes of the overly and unjustly powered? We must. Otherwise…..

We have a stellar roster of brilliant writers this month. Let’s applaud and cheer for us!!! We will write on!!!

Rant
By Linda Kaye

I think it’s time that I shoot up the smack and join the race to oblivion. Why not??? When I die it’ll be all their fault. Fuck you, stupid people, you’ve won, but in reality you’ve lost! Lost all sense of humanity, integrity, democracy.

Just wait America, you stupid fucks, when your friends are deported and your Social Security is revoked and your public schools close and your gas prices spike ha ha ha ha who’s a loser now!

"Droplets From A Banana Tree”
By Lida Parent Harris

Your collaboration with the fronds, are
two moss colored murals that weigh heavy.
My morning gaze makes me unaware how you hide
the night's tears.
Released on my face it plays like an angel to a harp.
I am asking myself how did you know I would be
there this way? Open I'm gleaming.
Someone come and share this spectacle,
a find so reassuring,  I am quick
to walk on merrily,
knowing your touch set me free.
The rest of the day turned to magic!
9/13/26.              7:51 p.m.

Lida began her writing career in 2001 when she began attending Open-mic events in the San Fernando Valley. She met wonderful friends in a coffeehouse, and soon her life and world opened.

The Harbinger of Joy
By Jackie Chou

I will leave my sorrow behind
and follow you,
like a procession of fallen leaves
tumbling in the autumn wind.

I will leave the dark corridors
and follow your light,
like a red or neon-green exit sign.

I will leave my loneliness behind
and let your hands guide me
in a synchronized dance.

Everywhere I go,
I will take you along,
my fingers wrapped around yours,
like holding on
to a lucky charm.

Jackie Chou is a writer of poetry and flash fiction who has recent work in Chainmail Poetry, Gnashing Teeth Publishing, Poetry Online, Alien Buddha Zine, and Collaborature. Her poems have been translated into Chinese in the journal Poetry Hall. Her story "Kiss From a Rose on the Grey" is forthcoming in Spillwords. She believes that writers must write in order to call themselves writers, and hopes to live up to that herself.

Ariadnes Thread
By Dean Okamura

My life is not pulled by a string,
not up, nor down, yo-yo tricks,
     been ages, puppeteer cut loose,
     and masks hung on ears.

Freedom frustrating,
     a web I cannot see,
     ties me to one lonely
     trial after another.

A greater, larger than life
     Minotaur with a beat, who
     beats the will and turns
     all into dumb, nodding heads.

We were the children of
     liberators, saved from fascism,
all the while, hidden reefs grew,
     our beautiful hair turned gray.

I need that string, like Theseus,
      it's dark and we need
a way out of this maze
once we strike down the beast.

Dean resides in Torrance. There is so much happening in this world, but he can only comment in small poems.

Corporate Crow
By Briana Ortega

My eyes open as I hear the crow squawking and pointing its beak at me
It is sitting on a branch outside my bedroom window on my favorite tree.

The crow is my alarm.
At this point, I have befriended this lonely crow
Everyday it wakes me up from my coffin of a bed that I struggle to get up from.

I walk to my restroom and see my puffy, tired face.
How I sigh of another day of contributing to this shitty society of a working class.
It disgusts me
or it even saddens me.
As a kid, we are taught to love something before we even love ourselves.
We're taught to live the " American dream.”
What American dream, I always say....
To work to barely make enough for food and to survive?
I live in a world where even food is on an installment payment plan.
The best I can do is be grateful to have a gig lined up, and just focus on staying positive.
Again, as I'm brushing my teeth, my last step before I head off to work, I see the crow pass by my restroom window, again squawking at me as if it were calling out to me to go outside and play.
I talk to it as if it were my friend.
"Not today satan, I have to go make money to survive so I don't die and rot." Rot?
Me quiero podrir en mi camita
( I want to rot in my bed) with a serial killer documentary and some snacks. But to die?
Even to die costs money, and I don't even have that shit prepared; it’d be another financial burden to my family, or what’s even sadder is that most do just die for the life insurance to save their family out of bankruptcy.
The crow squawks at me again, and now I'm intrigued. I step outside and feel the warmth of the sun, and I felt that high of vitamin D
which I rarely get since I work indoors and I'm locked away most seven days out of the week.
I sit outside like some lady who loves her cigarettes and waiting for the next chisme (gossip).
"Ehhhh, Fuck it; I'll call off and enjoy this pretty day since the crow said so. I have sick time, and today is a mental save my fucking life day."
The crow squawks at me again and flies away.
I'll see the crow again tomorrow, and again we'll both determine my dreadful walk to the corporate world.

Briana Ortega is a Chicana author of short stories and poetry whose work dwells in the shadows between love and suffering. Drawing inspiration from Gothic literature, folklore, and the darker corners of the human heart, her writing explores themes of passion, obsession, grief, longing, and emotional torment.

A Handmaid's Tale, the newest in the Banned Books and Paper People series.
By A Laura Brody

This artwork was made from pages of Harry Potter books that were cut into strips, woven together, and sewn down to a heavy interfacing backing. These books have been banned in multiple school districts, and since 2020 the author J. K. Rowling’s well-publicized hatred of trans people and promotion of anti-trans legislation in England has encouraged many readers to disavow her works.
The accents in white were printed out from The Handmaid’s Tale and the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), which effectively rendered abortion illegal in multiple states.

A. Laura Brody is a sculptor, speaker, curator, activist, and the founder of Opulent Mobility, a series of exhibits that ask artists to re-imagine disability as opulent and powerful.

Life is a stranger
Life is unfair
Life is random
Life is a miracle

Liphe is the future or a potential orgasm
Life was a magazine
Life is a cereal
Life is short and life is long

In the Shadow of Becoming
Poem by Marieta Maglas

The sunlit spring resonates,
as glaciers weep their slow elegy,
and I sense their grief seeping into the seas,
pursuing shores ensnared by frost.
Words flutter like butterflies,
not yet ablaze—just flickering—
their searing warmth
a promise yet to unfold.
The divine gaze carves designs
upon our souls,
each heartbeat a supplication
for wandering spirits,
their void reverberating through the valleys.
He watches over all
and the lost souls adrift,
yearning for a touch of love.
The sun traces its golden arc,
round and radiant,
orbiting another star,
weaving spirals that bring life into existence.
As Earth rushes into summer’s embrace,
her lush breath solidifies
thoughts into blossoms—
sacred Sundays swell with reflections,
thoughts of clarity, rains.
Outside—emerald whispers
tussle with the breeze,
and gravel crunches beneath feet
in search of peace;
the Church of St. Peter stands vigilant,
its corridors cradling stillness.
A priest battles to
resurrect forgotten melodies;
centuries of longing woven
into each chord.
In this assembly,
dreams spiral skyward—
a journey up spiritual
heights toward enlightenment,
where each spirit
reveals its uniqueness.
Yet shadows linger
beneath the sunlit expanse;
not the darkened woods
steeped in brooding silt—
but an emergence like
mushrooms from concealed seeds.
Ban Chao Gang Moo illuminates the unseen veils;
Ban Chao Gang Moo is not a forest.
All await the Revelation.
This Revelation simmers—
not green with renewal—
but a blazing summer scorching the paths,
a fierce maze for
those toying with flames
in the encroaching twilight.
It is summer’s blaze, not winter’s chill.
The winter bides its time
with icy arms tightly crossed;
frost-laden waves pulse
along ominous shores,
caught in the tempest’s whirl—
a dance that neither ignites
nor warms life’s rhythm
in shadowed chaos.

Tides
By Sonny Reed
Image, “Same Shape But Different”

Every morning he heads out early
to put a chain on the waves
Believing
the next one will be the one
he’ll catch

The wave won’t tell him
But her only job
is to disappear

Seagulls full of hate
Not rooting for any outcome
other than regret
Their one note song
mock the wave
They disregard his chains
They know who is stronger
and needs to be humiliated

His days spent chasing
Her nights scheming with the moon
Their lives happy only when others fail

Sonny Reed spent decades artist adjacent, works daily using words, and wonders whether or not aliens believe in him.  His poetry can be found in bathrooms nationwide, mostly on the caulk between the tiles.

Time
By Kassi Crews

I always thought time was my enemy.
Struggling through every moment
To fulfill my dreams.
Pushing through every hour
To seek my destiny.

This fearless, never changing warrior
Marches on through battle, through storm, through prosperity,
Feeling no mercy, no pain, no joy.

In time, all things begin and end.
In time, our destinies will emerge.
In time, my life will be destroyed.

By embracing this precious gem,
Time becomes my friend.
Living each second like it is my last,
I joyfully forge ahead and remember my past.

Each day, each month, each year,
My faith grows stronger,
My life glows longer.

I still seek my destiny,
This time with the fearless warrior at my side,
Your light as my guide.
By listening, learning and loving as my goal.
I open the doors to my inner most soul.

I struggle for world peace
For I know in time, some time
This will become a reality.
Time is on our side.
Time is our friend.
For time, will never cease.

Power on Earth
By, Anna Broome

Whether a reality or no
Together a love will come...
Continue for days

Even with eyes closed
Together a flowing will come
In this time of ours

Most times are revealing
Finding that enough
Is a learned contentment

With those same hands
Brave enough to
Save a man from a man

As those same hands
Know how to receive me
And refrain my eyes from weeping

At least and at last
To look upon you
While I see this day

Your bright stars
Your devine nature
Has the power to right my harm.

A cry from, a cry went up
Now lifted up
Together great and all flesh

Hearing your loneliness
dashing on the shore
your way was for ease

Respite your grasp
I refuse for just virtue's sake
To take a far-famed bow.

Whether the light of day
Renders good again
For a man that knows

That love never has the chance
To drop like the rain
While I hold blood-fed flame

And keep it burning
Just as it passes into
A togetherness closely at my side.

"The LAUSD Failed Them Both”
 By Michelle Y. Smith

This is America
This is LAUSD
Not a three ring circus with Bozo the clown
2nd largest school district in the USA
Who said, "King Kong ain't got nothing on me!"
Training Day detective, dirty cop with handsomeness
Loose Lips Sink Ships
Fictional failure to society, there is no guess?
Did you hear the bully call him a nigger and a pussy too, instigator who didn't cuss like a sailor
Proverbs 18:23 reads about the power of words are in the life and death of the tongue
Words can too kill
or Sticks and stones may break my bones,
but names will never hurt me
Xavier was chased to his death,
beaten within an inch of his life
ran to and flew over the fourth floor rail
like the cow jumped over the moon
Xavier was chased to his death
that bully had the balls to look at the body splatter
Xavier's life did not matter
The LAUSD failed them both
For years his heart went pitter patter
toe to toe with bullies all of his school life
The bullies are the true cowards, mouthing
obscenities, racist epithets, which isn't not
bravado, words not taught in class
The bully dissed the elderly teacher folk,
It's a miracle that the bully didn't approach
him, another possible provoke
Makes me wonder about the home environment
or lack of who allowed him to grow up like that
The LAUSD failed them both
Would X benefited from homeschooling
Why did he not know karate with the
kung fu grip
He didn't defend himself
The power of Muhammad Ali
would have aprapoe
Float like a 🦋 and sting like a 🐝
Pulverized on the beat up blender mode
Did he encounter the bully before, so with
both, there was not a first rodeo?
The LAUSD failed them both
Brown vs Brown, no cultural divide
Arrest that bully for life
or is Xavier's choice suicide?

Human
By Heather Romero-Kornblum

What do you do
when you are both conqueror
and conquered?

You have trilled your voice
Plunged sword

Felt your own blood gurgle
through ruptured shell

Hung between your heaven and hell
you brought souls to life
to extinguish

JOHN ROBERTS - DEMOCRACY DESTROYER 2
By Keith Kurlander

A bold, satirical pop-art portrait of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, rendered in a highly stylized halftone/comic-book aesthetic. His face dominates the center in orange and yellow tones with purple and black linework. The background consists of dense red, green, and blue dots, creating a psychedelic effect. Along the left side, “DIS★OBAY” appears vertically in large red lettering with a star between the words. On the right, three red-and-black stamped labels read “KORRUPT,” “KOMPLICIT,” and “KOMPROMISED.” The exaggerated colors, heavy outlines, halftone texture, and confrontational typography give the artwork the appearance of a political protest poster.
