Strange times. I know some people that have no idea fascism is at our front door. They see no problem either because of their news source, or lack of news source. What do you say to them? I know I want to scream at them. Be curious. Don’t be braindead. Life is too short. So, I find myself resisting, how I can. Marching. Boycotting major corporations that suck. Making art. Finding joy. Living, while watching carefully. Did you catch any of Cory Booker’s take over of the Senate floor, making good trouble. What a man. What a human. Caring about others. Inspiring cause it sure looks like some of our team are a tad fecklace. How are you coping with the clusterfuck in Washington? Do you know people that have been effected? Got any Trump supporting family? How are you handling them, especially as they realize he ain’t there for them? Crazy times…

At least we have art. And poetry. Let’s see what Linda Kaye has over at Poet’s Place. She always has outspoken writers utilizing their pens to defend democracy and shit like that. That’s a good thing. You know what else is good? Going out to see art. I’m listing some options below, including a trip to the desert for Desert X. I haven’t gone yet, but have heard it’s worth the trip. Check out what Artillery says about it.

I don’t support a government that thinks people are disposable. Resist. Shop small. Inconvenience yourself, like you used to before a Target or Walmart were everywhere, and Amazon, no. Just no. Home Depot. No. Lowes. No. Look for the lists with the good guys and spend your dollars there. We can show them who is the economy.

Did you check out any of the art fairs last month? LA Art Show? Frieze? The Other Art Fair? Feliz? Did I miss any? I didn’t make it to all of them, cause there’s just not enough hours in the day. I did go to the LA Art Show and I always enjoy that show. It’s a great way to see a ton of art, in one place, at one time. Boom! Art over-load, but in a good way. Check out this video from the show.

I went to Frieze also. It was my first time and I felt cramped, not that inspired. Maybe a bigger venue would make it better. Maybe more space between the aisles.

January. Change is Coming. And Some Things Remain the Same. Happy New Year! Hell Yeah!

I need to address the tragedy that is taking place in Los Angeles as I write this. It’s not a happy new year for many who have lost everything in the devastating wildfires that have laid waste to the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. So many lives torn apart and thrown upside down. So much lost. And it continues. New fires have broken out as well, and Los Angeles is experiencing something city changing. My heart aches in sadness. Below is what I initially wrote, before the fires erupted and changed so much. We’re in for interesting times my friends. Let’s stick together and love one another and help where we can. So read on…and thanks for coming here. Be well.

Happy New Year! Hope all is well in all of your worlds. We’re approaching very interesting times here in the US. Most of us are doing our best to not let the possible chaos coming to seep into our lives. There will certainly be a flood of creativity in response to whatever nonsense is going on in Washington. Art will be made, and statements will be made. We will all find our joy, despite the orange goon. Anyway, there’s a lot of art going on around town and a lot more coming. Find inspiration and use it to fuel your creative spirit.

Art in Dongsan presents Steel Che (Youngkwan Choi)

Art in Dongsan, established in 2018 with galleries in Seoul and Goyang, presents the metalwork of Steel Che (Youngkwan Choi) at the LA Art Show 2025. This exhibition highlights Che's sculptural works, which repurpose industrial materials into artistic forms.

Youngkwan Choi, known professionally as Steel Che, has been creating metal sculptures for over three decades. His work, deeply influenced by his background in art education and his family's connection to the steel industry, bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression.

The exhibition's centerpiece, "Steam Robot," demonstrates Che's mastery of steel manipulation. This large-scale sculpture, along with other works crafted from discarded metal, showcases Che's artistic philosophy of transforming industrial materials into thought-provoking art. His diverse career, including collaborations with Harley Davidson Korea, informs his unique approach to sculpture.

Coral Gallery presents Roberto Vivo

Coral Gallery, founded by Isabel Tassara in 2018 and based in Midtown, Miami, brings the work of Uruguayan artist Roberto Vivo to the LA Art Show 2025. This presentation aligns with the gallery's mission to showcase contemporary Latin American art and foster connections between Latin America, the United States, and Europe.

Roberto Vivo, born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1953, began his artistic career later in life, transitioning from a background in business administration to become a painter and sculptor. His work, which spans abstract painting and sculpture, employs a variety of materials including corten steel, bronze, granite, and aluminum.

Coral Gallery's presentation at the LA Art Show will feature Roberto Vivo's sculptural works, including the highlight piece "The Human Tribe Totem." This large-scale bronze sculpture, which debuted at the 2024 Venice Biennale, embodies Vivo's signature style of fluid, organic forms that challenge material rigidity. Standing at 77 x 95 inches, it embodies the artist's vision of human unity and diversity, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between form, space, and global harmony.

Snisarenko Gallery presents "She, Unbroken"

Snisarenko Gallery, a Los Angeles-based contemporary art space founded by Lia Snisarenko, brings a powerful and timely exhibition to the LA Art Show 2025. "She, Unbroken" showcases the work of Ukrainian-born female artists who have lived through the experience of war, offering a profound exploration of resilience, identity, and transformation.

"She, Unbroken" showcases works by Ukrainian artists Inna Kharchuk, Anna Veriki, Liza Zhdanova, and Iryna Maksymova. Through diverse media including painting, sculpture, and video art, they explore themes of displacement, memory, and resilience. Together, they offer a multifaceted view of the Ukrainian female experience during conflict, capturing both their struggles and courage.

Visitors to the LA Art Show will have the opportunity to engage with these compelling narratives, gaining insight into the transformative power of art in the face of adversity. December. The Holiday Season is Really Upon Us. Buy Art this Season!

‘tis the season. We’re all trying to be festive so we can drown out the obvious shit show coming our way. Finding joy…and sharing good things with others. We’ve been having some fun holiday oriented activities at The Makery, which has been a welcomed distraction. And chocolate too. And lots of art. It’s a good season for art, and gifts. As I said, ‘tis the season.

Over at Poet’s Place Linda and her ever-growing group of poets and writers are letting everyone know about the upcoming year, and times. Art conquers all, right? There is quite a bit of great art around town right now, so if you find yourself in town for this holiday season check some of these shows out.

As usual, for right now, The Getty’s PST:Art and Science Collide is happening all over Southern California. Try to see all of the exhibit, I dare you. I’m sure you’ll enjoy yourself, as well as learn some cool science stuff. All good.

LA Art Show 2024

The LA Art Show, LA’s largest and longest-running art fair, wrapped up its 29th iteration

following a triumphant return to the Los Angeles Convention Center from February 14

through 18, 2024. Guided by producer and director Kassandra Voyagis, the fair kicked

off the city’s art season, uniting galleries, curators, collectors, and celebrities alike.

LA Art Show presented another spectacular international lineup with over 100

exhibitors from countries including the Philippines, Italy, Israel, Peru, and South Korea.

“LA Art Show is a one-stop destination for the public and collectors to view art work

from all over the world as we continue our commitment to delivering the most

comprehensive and international contemporary art experience possible,” says Voyagis.

The fair debuted with a successful Opening Night Premiere Party on Valentine’s Day

hosted by award-winning actress Lucy Hale, benefiting LA Art Show’s new charity

partner, American Heart Association, which received 15% of ticket sales in support of

the organization’s Life is Why™ campaign.

Artificial intelligence and Black History Month played significant roles in this year’s fair

as well as key initiatives that support the next generation of artists from “Athletes for

Life” founded by former NFL’s Greg Bell to the featured exhibition of Young Masters

Art Prize, presented by Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London, supporting emerging talents

from diverse backgrounds.

LA Art Show’s educational platform, DIVERSEartLA, partnered with seven international

art institutions to explore the intersection of memory and AI. Projects included the

Nevada Museum of Art that presented “The Journey” by Guillermo Bert, featuring 20

life-sized wood sculptures of immigrants employed as frontline workers during the

pandemic as a way to explore how ancient traditions and AI merge to create narratives

of identity and memory. AAL Museum (Santiago, Chile) presented a hypnotizing visual

narrative, “Be Water,” led by esteemed artist, Antuan, highlighting the essential

collaboration between humanity and AI to create a new network of human

consciousness.

A few other LA Art Show 2024 highlights included:

• A musical performance by Korean artist Choi Sori who through drumming and

manipulation of metal surfaces, Choi creates an abstract interplay of light, color,

and sound.

• Iconic LA artist Robert Vargas was onsite live painting his powerful mural –

inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s “The World House” – which honored Black

History Month and conveyed a message of peace and unity.

• The Tanya Weddemire Gallery exhibited “Give Us Our Flowers” by acclaimed

Haitian American artist, Guy Stanley Philoche, who found art as his refuge at an

early age.

• Fremin Gallery from New York showcased inspiring works including female

Turkish artist Ardan Özmenolu’s “Blue” a stunning sculpture of a tree on a

wooden stump, created from layers of glass panels and nail polish.

• LP Gallery from South Korea featured renowned artist Dain Yoon known for

painting on her skin to create surreal self-portraits.

• Licht Feld Gallery presented photography from award-winning celebrity

photographer, Markus Klinko, including his iconic image of Mariah Carey,

recently projected on stage at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

• Fabrik Projects Gallery showcased ‘The Soul of Your City” exhibition, the

culmination of a global photography competition capturing the hidden spirit and

true identity of cities through the lenses of local photographers.

• DIVERSEartLA presented the second Museum Acquisition Award for Emerging

Artists participating at the fair. The award-winning artist was Barcelona-based

Juan Escudero on behalf of Pigment Gallery selected by Ana Maria Matthei, AAL

museum director & AAL Magazine founder, along with DIVERSEartLA curator,

Marisa Caichiolo.

November and Change. Not the Change We Wanted.

It’s official. He’ll be president again. I am so disappointed with members of the populace. I know my tribe is on the same page as me, but what about the others? I have family that support that person. Maybe one day they will be able to explain it to me. In the meantime, I am planning on disconnecting from the media drama that we are in store for. I refuse to allow this to take me to a place I don’t enjoy inhabiting. I plan to preserve my goodness and seek joy by creating for myself, and for others, providing a platform where they can speak. Check out Poet’s Place this month to see what’s Linda’s poets have for you. Vent, but don’t hurt yourself by being so angry or confused or depressed. He’s not worth it. They’re not worth it. Help others find joy. Be there for your tribe and beyond. Make shit!!

Show Up, Share Art, Stand Together: MAS Attack Returns to TAM December 13th!

Torrance, CA – After a challenging and divisive period, artists from Southern California are invited to gather, share, and support one another with the return of the Mutual Appreciation Society (MAS) event: MAS Attack! This one-night-only pop-up exhibition will take place on Friday, December 13th, from 6-9pm at the Torrance Art Museum (TAM), offering a space for artists to share work that reflects the turbulent times we are living in.

In the wake of political unrest, social tensions, and the aftermath of a divisive election, many artists are grappling with what the future holds. The MAS Attack event is an opportunity to express the emotions, struggles, and hopes that have emerged from this period of uncertainty. It is about reaffirming our sense of community, replacing grief, anger, and anxiety with hope, resilience, and strength through art.

How to Participate:

  • Artists are invited to simply drop off their work at the Torrance Art Museum from Tuesday, December 10th to Friday, December 13th, between 10am and 4pm.

  • No registration or application is required—just bring your art and show up.

  • The Opening Reception will take place on Friday, December 13th, from 6-9pm.

  • At 9pm, artists can retrieve their work.

    MAS Attack welcomes all forms of art and all voices, with no restrictions on medium, style, or message. Whether political, emotional, or personal, your art has a place in this exhibition, and your voice is valued. This is an event focused on solidarity, community, and the power of collective expression. Together, we are stronger.

Workshop #3: Watercolor & Textiles

Explore watercolor painting on fabric to consider how materials work together to create new forms and images. The current OXY ARTS exhibition showcases images of invisibility amulets from Malaysia, Ghana, Nigeria and Thailand behind embroidered curtains which the viewer must lift to see. Inspired by this installation choice, we will explore how adding fabric can obscure, complicate, and transform our experience of a painting. 

The current exhibition, Invisibility: Powers & Perils, is curated by Yael Lipschutz and presented in collaboration with Getty's PST ART: Art & Science Collide. The exhibition explores how both invisibility and hypervisibility impact privacy, history, and systems of knowledge on a social, environmental and cosmic level. The participating artists, scientists and activists ask us to consider the dangers and complexities of how visibility functions in the world and cosmos.

October and Spooky Season Have Arrived!

October means fall is almost here. A couple of heat waves first and then we can settle into autumn and the spooky season. Art season to. There is something going on around town from now until forever! The fall Brewery Art Walk was this past weekend and was super fun. Everyone I know was running around arting and having a blast. The Highland Park Independent Film Festival also happened this past weekend. You may have seen the schedule in last month’s edition. Hopefully you got a chance to catch some of their films. Wander over to Poet’s Place to read this months poetry provided to you every month by the lovely Linda Kaye.

Using plastic canvas, thread and yarn, participants will create dynamic portraits and other images (figurative or not) that explore ideas of identity. The class is facilitated by Kandy G Lopez, an artist and educator who believes in the importance of self-expression and artistic discovery for all.

Please join us to celebrate the opening of Yolanda M. López’s twin exhibitions Portrait of the Artist and Women's Work is Never Done, and the opening reception for Desde los Cielos.

Portrait of the Artist presents a compendium of López’s work from the 1970s and 1980s, when she created an influential body of paintings, drawings, and collages that investigate and reimagine representations of women within Chicano/a/x culture and society at large.

Women’s Work is Never Done is an exhibition of rediscovered drawings, collages, paintings, photographs, prints, and process pieces that charts the evolution of Lopez’s creative projects over six decades from the 1960s to the 2020s.

It’s finally getting warm around here. Fortunately not like the rest of the country, which is suffering from heat! This is why we live here. The weather and the art. We do have the largest creative economy in the world. Learn more about that at the Otis Report website. Knowledge is power. I love how it shows how important creative people are in the world. But we knew that already. It’s about educating the others.

When you go to an art event, hopefully one you saw here, you contribute to the creative economy by not just maybe buying a piece of art, but by all the other things you indulge in while you’re out. Keep it up Los Angeles! Making art and seeing art! Speaking of art, go check out Poet’s Place to read some art, provided by Linda Kaye, and her group of poets.

June Gloom. At Least it's Not the Heatdome!

Summer is almost here and it appears Southern California is being spared from a vicious “heatdome” over much of the west. Crazy. But, I”m grateful to be here in Los Angeles not suffering the heat. It’ll be here soon enough. In the meantime, what’s the art scene providing for us this month? All kinds of cool options and some are listed below.

Go over to Poet’s Place when you get a chance and see what Linda Kaye has in store for you. She just got back from some time in Europe and she’s sharing it, along with work by some of her poet friends. Enjoy.

DTLA Art Night is bustling away with new galleries joining every month. Check it out. The Los Angeles Makery will be having an art extravaganza, with shows topside, with the 2nd Annual Spring Invitational, and downstairs in Sub Terra there’s the opening for Confluence. When you’re done with us you can go next door to LACP, up to Broadway to Gabba Gallery, over to 4th and Spring for The Luna Factory and across the street the DTLA Art Night Gallery. Get the map and see where else you need to go.

A Contemporary Art Magazine with a Focus on the Los Angeles Art Scene

Art and Cake has a series going on right now called 60 Over 60. It’s a fabulous way to find out what it’s like to be an artist in the later years of life, from their perspective.

Here we are right smack in the middle of spring. It’s generally gorgeous out so outdoor events are a good choice for art activities right now. The art shows also tend to theme shows to showcase springtime in all of its beauty. Below you’ll find a few shows like that listed.

Wander over to Poet’s Place and check out the Barcelona edition from Linda Kaye. She has been across the pond, visiting France and Spain. She has a nice collection of poets this month.

This year's application for the Beyond the Box - Mural Art Program is now open! Apply before the deadline of June 21, 2024, at 5:00 PM PST.


Beyond the Box extends public art to new areas in an inventive way while creating an attractive environment. The theme for this year is Art & Science Collide in celebration of Glendale Library, Arts & Culture’s participation in PST ART: Art & Science Collide, which is the Getty Foundation’s Southern California regional arts and culture initiative returning in September 2024. This year’s theme, Art & Science Collide, will create opportunities for civic dialogue around some of the most urgent problems of our time by exploring past and present connections between art and science. Applicants are highly encouraged to visit the PST ART: Art & Science Collide website at Pst.Art/en/exhibitions to gain inspiration for submissions and proposals.


Artists are strongly encouraged to incorporate this year’s theme in their design. The Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) will fund $1,000.00 per utility box and anticipates selecting artwork for up to 15 utility boxes. Artists are responsible for prepping, priming, and painting the utility boxes, and are encouraged to incorporate volunteers in the painting process.


Beyond the Box is open to all local and regional artists. The ACC encourages both new and established artists to apply. Artists may apply as an individual artist or as a group. City of Glendale employees are not eligible to apply.


Beyond the Box is supported by the City of Glendale and the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission.

April has Arrived!

It’s tax season! Unless you’re getting a refund, right? Those people filed their taxes right away. Anyway, there is art all over this wonderful city. How can we see it all? The Other Art Fair is this weekend. There’s an opening at the Los Angeles Makery tonight. All kinds of good stuff.

Wander over to Poets Place, which Linda sent in from Paris, France, and see what her merry poets have written this month. First heatwave is coming next week! What outdoor art can everyone check out? How about mural tours? That sounds like fun.

WHAT:      In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, Metro Art and KJazz are teaming up for KJazz Tracks at Union Station on Saturday, April 27 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The free concert is open to all with performances taking place in the station’s historic Ticket Concourse. Hosted by KJazz DJ Rhonda Hamilton, the event will feature three uniquely talented artists, including Kassa Overall as headliner, and Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few and Darynn Dean also on the bill.

                               The first 40 visitors to present their TAP cards to the Metro Art info table will receive a free Metro Art book, Los Angeles Through the Eyes of Artists, and Union Station swag bag!

                             Go Metro to the event! Union Station is accessible via Metro Rail, Metro Bus and several municipal bus lines. March is Here! Spring is Within View!

We are moments away from time change and longer days. It should be warmer too. It makes seeing outdoor art all the more pleasant. Have you been to the Huntington lately, or Descanso Gardens? Both places with gorgeous gardens and equally wonderful art. If you wander over to Barnsdall Park, you can catch the show, Apophenia at the LAMAG in the park, which closes March 16th. You can also see the Hollyhock House, by Frank Lloyd Wright. Los Angeles is truly blessed to have so many art venues.

A fresh month means a fresh dose of poetry from Linda Kaye and her poets over at Poet’s Place. Check out her offerings. And if you ever want to submit your own poetry, send it to Linda.
