Multiverse
Bob Landström
curated by Kate Stern
Bob Landström, known for his abstract, metaphysical paintings made from crushed, pigmented igneous rock, makes his debut in Los Angeles at bG Gallery with his new solo exhibition, Multiverse.
Multiverse includes several new works from Landström and is as much an investigation into his personal fascination with metaphysics and theories about multiple universes as it is a wide-sweeping exploration into the ways we perceive reality and create meaning.
“Landström uses ancient materials to explore the nature of our existence as though upon ashes of the fire in Plato’s cave itself.”
– Om Bleicher, bG Gallery Owner
Opening Reception

Saturday, July 16th, 2022
bG Gallery, 2525 Michigan Avenue A2, Santa Monica, CA 90404
Happy July!! Keep it Safe and Sane...Sane, Hahaha!!
You can hear the fireworks in the distance. It’s that season again. Summer. And who would have thought that for the 4th of July women would have to deal with the reversal of Roe v Wade. We’ve had rights taken away. this is not a time to celebrate. No, it’s time to get angry. Create the change we need. Artists know what to do. Get busy. Get marching. Get to calling your representatives. Hey Jimmy Gomez! Can you hear us? Codify Roe v Wade. Get rid of the filibuster. Impeach lying Supreme Court judges. Simple requests. Anyway, here we are. What’s next? Good question. But in the meantime we do need to keep stimulated and inspired, and the best way to do that is to go see art. Or read some poetry. Check out Linda’s poets over at Poet’s Place.
Now, for the art…where should we start? I’d like to go to The Cheech next. I’m jealous of all of my friends that have already been there. I’m going this coming week. The Cheech houses the largest and most fabulous collection of Chicano art in the world. Go. Enjoy.
THE WEST COAST THEATRICAL DEBUT OF ART DOCUMENTARY MAKE ME
FAMOUS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE 40TH ANNUAL OUTFEST FILM
FESTIVAL.
The 40th Annual Outfest Film Festival will present the West Coast Theatrical Premiere of feature documentary, MAKE ME FAMOUS, a fresh look at the iconic Downtown art scene in NYC in the 1980s.
MAKE ME FAMOUS brings forward a popular era while unearthing many artists, photographers, and stories that have seldom been in the public eye. The 1980s art scene is famous for breakout artists like Basquiat and Keith Haring, but there were many other artists who made a powerful impact. Set during arguably the last great art explosion in American history, MAKE ME FAMOUS tells the story of painter Edward Brezinski in his maniacal quest for fame. Told by the artists and gallery owners themselves, MAKE ME FAMOUS gives an intimate portrait of what it was like to be an artist in NYC in the 1980s, with an unexpected twist at the end when you find out what happened with Brezinski’s mysterious death in the Côte d’Azur. This feature art documentary delves into the spirit of the artists themselves, what drove their generation and what they were up against.
Dates and Times: Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 2PM Director Brian Vincent and Producer Heather Spore will be in attendance for a Q&A following the Harmony Gold screening. Tickets are on sale through www.outfest.org, and single tickets can be purchased for $14. Films are available for streaming after their Theatrical Screening.
La Brea Tar Pits Announces Summer Programming
that Celebrates Museum’s First Confirmed Fossil
WHAT
Through Labor Day, visitors can enjoy special programming at La Brea Tar Pits that celebrates one of the Ice Age’s mightiest predators: the saber-toothed cat. This summer, visitors can experience fantastic tours and programs, witness the Ice Age coming to life in Ice Age Encounters performances, help scientists with their discoveries, and engage in specially guided tours.
As the first confirmed fossil found at La Brea Tar Pits, saber-toothed cats are iconic symbols of Ice Age Los Angeles and California as a whole. In 1974, the saber-toothed cat was officially designated as our state fossil. Just like L.A., saber-toothed cats have killer vibes. This powerful predator is captured perfectly in its scientific name, Smilodon fatalis, coming from the Greek smilodon for “blade” and “tooth”, and the Latin fatalis for “deadly.”
A self-guided scavenger hunt with La Brea Tar Pits’ Saber-tooth highlights is the purrfect starting place.

Presents
Ryoko Kaneta
In Our Nature
Downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) is proud to announce their next major solo show In Our Nature, featuring new works from Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta and set to premiere June 25th in Gallery 3.
One of the leading figures of Japan’s up-and-coming generation of artists, Kaneta will be making her U.S. solo debut with her upcoming show at CHG, which features 14 new works. The Tokyo-based artist paints according to ancient Japanese philosophies, including the thought that God dwells in all beings. Her descriptive paintings are embedded in historic cultures yet exist as fleeting spectacles of nature. The artist applies acrylic paint to canvas and masterfully blends to create an image that actively develops and moves with cyclicality. Her artworks suggest a passing of time and celebrate nature’s ephemerality.

May Means One More Month of Spring! Don't Forget to Smell the Flowers. And May the Fourth Be With You.
It’s time to mobilize. Women’s rights are dear to me. We are seeing the disregard and disrespect for women in this nation. We cannot allow 5 individuals to reak havok on the lives of women across this country. We in California are fortunate to have a safe haven for those in need of reproductive healthcare, but when you see the maps of the regions where women will loose control of their bodies, it’s heartbreaking. I’m not sure the Republicans have any idea of what they are unleashing. I know this is the red line I draw in the sand and I will protest, volunteer, contribute to make sure that those responsible for doing this to 51% of the population, need to be removed from their jobs. Artists need to get to work. Come scream with me! Create artwork and send it here to post.
Check out Poet’s Place this month. Linda Kaye is gathering her poets, to share their work with you. Now, here’s some of what is happening around the LA art scene.

March - A Time for Change
I’m distracted. It’s a combination of things. Moving my studio, world issues, and moving my studio. March is a good time for change. Spring arrives, we have the time change, and I’m moving my studio…but this isn’t all about me. I can’t help be reflective on these things. Just as it feels like the pandemic might be receding enough to act like things might get normal, that idiot Putin decides to start WWW 3. Distracted.
This is where art can be helpful. My move is into a cool space down in Little Tokyo, The Makery, with cool people, and we will do cool things. We’re planning on having art shows, and classes and workshops, and it’ll be a maker space. These are all good things. Here’s our first call for artists!
Another Call to Artists - “There From Here”
Over at Art Share, in downtown LA, They have teamed up with the fabulous Baha Danesh for a Call to Artists. Hurry as the deadline is upon up.
There From Here is an exhibition that revolves around the idea of “‘place”’ and how it affects artists. Artists will explore their own surroundings and highlight key elements within their own context of self and surroundings.
Artists will explore concepts through a variety of mediums, ranging from charcoal and oil paint to digital media. Figurative and environmental works are rendered with a whimsical touch and address themes pertaining to humanity, such as memory, identity, mental health and fantastical worlds created not only through our experiences, but those of ancient cultures as well. Embrace your inner dreamer and wander amidst the many realities of everyday life.
February...What's Your Creative Outlet?
Month two of 2022. What’s going on with all of you? What’s your creative outlet? We’ve been in a strange place for almost two years now, and most of the artists I know have been creating art and music and have maintained their creativity. But what is your outlet? Sometimes for me it’s cooking or baking. Sometimes it’s writing. Whatever it is, it cleanses my creative spirit, and allows me to go back to my regularly scheduled creativity, ready to go. What about you? Maybe you need a fresh creative outlet.
Go over to Poet’s Place, the page curated by Linda Kaye, and let her posse of poets inspire your writing, or painting, or music, or dance! Maybe you should try a class. A workshop. Find a new talent or passion. You can scroll down to find some places that offer class and opportunities to expand your mind. Or check out some art at some of the local galleries.
Full disclosure…I’ll be here selling cool glass goodies. It’s Valentine’s Day soon after all. Hope to see you there!

Living through and understanding that we are in the midst of one of the more seismic events of the twenty-first century has affected us as citizens of the world, as well as individually. The Pandemic and the Quarantine have disrupted multiple aspects of our lives while the specter of death and illness has been consistently present. Most visual artists are solitary creatures by nature in regards to studio practices, but the Quarantine brought a different type of isolation. Work produced during the Quarantine, by nature, is a visual documentation of artists’ emotional response, either directly, or indirectly.
The Quarantine allowed for some artists to delve more deeply into a continuous body or work, such as the human impact upon our ecological environment, while some artists experienced shifts in formal expressions or content in a desire to find hope amidst daily unease. Additional artists found their mode of work in the public sphere completely disrupted, and had to find alternative ways of working. “Quaranta” presents works created during the Pandemic, and the artists included reflect the cultural mosaic of the Quarantine, its uncertainty, and how it is reflected in the collective experience and adjustments for a continually changing world.

Featured Exhibition Highlight: Jane Kahan Gallery
We’re excited to welcome Jane Kahan Gallery as an exhibiting gallery in the Modern and Contemporary section of the LA Art Show 2022! The New York City-based gallery specializes in Modern Master prints, sculpture, paintings, important 20th Century Fine Art tapestries and Picasso Ceramics.
In the upcoming Show, Jane Kahan Gallery is presenting one of this year's Featured Exhibitions, CONCEPTUAL TRADITIONS, a selection of artworks from its collection of 20th century art by Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Alexander Calder. This exhibition brings together five works that highlight the collaborative process of creating art in specialized mediums such as tapestry, printmaking and ceramic.

ROOTS Gallery Highlights:
Welcoming ROOTS Galleries to the LA Art Show
Honoring the voices and movements that came before, ROOTS is the LA Art Show’s exhibition space dedicated to galleries that showcase historical works and contemporary artists following in those traditions. Among the galleries in the ROOTS section for 2022 are Rehs Galleries and J. Sabry Fine Art Gallery.
Rehs Galleries
We are delighted to welcome back Rehs Galleries as an exhibiting gallery in the ROOTS section of the LA Art Show. Rehs Galleries has been a participating exhibitor with the LA Art Show since the very beginning and the only gallery that has participated every year—that's 27 years! Thank you, Rehs Galleries!
"We have fond memories of the first show, back in 1994, when 14 Fine Art Dealers Association members held an exhibition at the Pasadena Convention Center. That year, about 300 people attended the show," said gallery owner Howard Rehs.
Edouard Leon Cortes – Café del a Paix, 1949
Courtesy Rehs Galleries
Based in New York City, Rehs Galleries is considered one of the world's preeminent dealers of 19th and early 20th-century European paintings. This year at the LA Art Show, Rehs will present a selection of fine art including works by Edouard Leon Cortes, Emilio Sanchez Perrier, Arthur John Elsley, John Stobart, Leon Perrault and Mark Lague.
Léon-Jean-Bazille Perrault (1832-1908) was a mid-nineteenth century French academic
classical painter who focused on representing subjects that reinforced the affluent bourgeoisie
in their desire to have beautiful pictures adorning their homes.
J Sabry Fine Art Gallery
We are very pleased to welcome J Sabry Fine Art as an exhibitor in our ROOTS section! Based in Beverly Hills, California, the gallery specializes in contemporary and historical traditional and Western works of art by pre-eminent artists from Norman Rockwell to Frederic Remington.
Whether a collector is looking for a multi-million dollar painting, a modestly priced art treasure under $10,000, or something in between, J Sabry Fine Art is focused on helping collectors find art they will love and enjoy owning for years to come.
“We feel very blessed to be able to help collectors with their art collections and we look forward to visitors from the LA Art Show dropping by the booth and getting a chance to view some of our beautiful art!” said gallery co-owner Joanne Watson.
Among the selected works the gallery will present at the LA Art Show, are highly collectible paintings by Pino and Norman Rockwell.
Born in New York City, Norman Percevel Rockwell (1894–1978) was an American painter and illustrator who became famous for his illustrations of everyday life featured on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post magazine for almost five decades.. His works have a broad popular appeal in the United States for their reflection of American culture.
Pino Daeni (1939–2010) was an Italian artist who captured feelings of warmth, nostalgia, love and family in his work. His paintings are often set on the vibrantly sunny beaches of the Mediterranean, where he grew up. Born Giuseppe Dangelico, Pino became known worldwide for his ability to convey the movements and expressions of his subjects.

Boom! It's December! Where Did the Year Go?
‘Tis the Season!
In what feels like the longest blink of the eye, it’s December and 2021 is about to be over. Uh…yeah. I’m sure most of you can call this year one of the strangest out there. What has your creative outlet been? For all of you artists out there, you probably have been creating as if there wasn’t much different going on out there in the world. Some people write poetry and every month Linda Kaye gathers some of those poets for Poet’s Place. Check out this months readings.
There are holiday events going on all over this great big city and I’m listing some of them here.
Disclaimer…I’m selling here. Come do some Christmas shopping.
November - The Holiday Season has Begun!
Once trick or treating has ended, it’s officially the holiday season. I drove by a house with their Christmas lights up already. People need normal. The holidays can feel like normal. Go with it. Anyway, holiday season means shopping and eating. For your shopping needs, consider buying from an artist. Not only will you get something unique and of course, handmade, but you’ll help that artist and not a big box store, or worse yet, Amazon. Check around your local stores, or look for holiday shows. I know I’m doing as many as I can. I made a lot of stuff during the pandemic. Anyone need some glass?
And don’t forget all the art that’s out there. Fortunately most shows are in person, finally! And as of this month you must show your vaccination card to get into most venues, restaurants, and other larger businesses. Fine with me. Ask away, I’m ready. Are you? I know my buddy Linda Kaye is. We were out recently and had to show those cards. I was excited. And about that LInda…she handles Poet’s Place every month here at LA Art News. Go over there and check it out.
Also check out this article written by Dale Youngman, who has recently started writing for Art Report Today. Check out her article about artist Andrea Marie Echavarria.

EXHIBITION DATES: November 13 - December 4, 2021
October - Fall has Arrived.
It finally feels like fall and I’m ok with that. You know what else I’m ok with is showing my vaccination card at the door of an establishment. It happened and I was happy. The more they ask, the more people will get vaxxed, or they can’t hang with the rest of us. OK. But what about the art? Oh, there’s a bunch. And music. Like this weekend at Sycamore Grove Park, you’ll find Councilmemeber Gil Cedillo’s 8th Annual Latin Jazz and Music Festival. Always a good time there! I’ll be at the Culver City Art Walk and Roll slinging my wares and talking to folks. Cactus Gallery will be having there first in person reception at the Spring arts Collective from 106pm on Saturday. I wish I could be in two places at once. Go see them if you can’t come see me.
Other cool information is also listed below. Another place to visit here on the site is Poet’s Place. Linda Kaye compiles a wonderful gathering of poets and their poetry.
Found over at the web site, This is Colossal I found this article about a show here in Los Angeles…
If you’re in Los Angeles, stop by The Golden Pagoda between October 14 and 24 to see the quirky, spirited works in person, and check out the available pieces on Instagram. As with previous shows, 10 percent of all sales will be donated to cat care, with this year’s funds going to Kitt Crusaders, Faces of Castelar, and Milo’s Sanctuary.

Another show I’m planning on checking out is the Warhol Show at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex.
Here are a Few "Save the Dates!"
An Evening with Ellen Durkan
On this evening, we invite you to join us in welcoming Ellen Durkan as she shares her unique and exquisite work in an hour long talk and visual feast, followed by a question-and-answer period. This event is a prelude to her three-day class in Forging Fashion that will begin the following morning in Adam’s Forge.
Highland Park Independent Film Festival is Almost Here!
The HPIFF showcase includes 1 Narrative Feature, 4 Documentary Features and 25 Shorts. These include 9 World Premieres and 3 LA Premieres.
This year’s festival also includes - Film Fan Fest - a free event which takes place outside of the Highland Theater and includes music, dancing and live painting by Highland Park artists as an outreach component. This year DJ Ama B will provide live music Al Fresco Red Carpet on Figueroa.
Opening night is Friday October 1st and following the red carpet, there will be a screening of the feature documentary “Carlos Almaraz, Playing with Fire” directed by Elsa Flores Almaraz and Richard Montoya. The film explores the life of Carlos Almaraz, a Chicano activist, sexual outlaw, and visionary painter of some of the most unforgettable images of Southern California. A special mention will be made since the Highland Theater is directly across the street from the old Centro de Arte Popular that Carlos Almaraz co-founded and because it was recently approved by The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission to the city's list of Historic-Cultural Monuments as a location important to the Chicano Arts Movement.
Directly before the screening, HPIFF will present the 2021 HPIFF Humanitarian Award to Juan Escobedo. A son of East Los Angeles, Juan uses film and photography to portray issues in society such as domestic violence, HIV prevention, and human trafficking. With the support of nonprofits in Boyle Heights, East LA and Watts, he creates films depicting characters and communities affected by these issues. Juan founded the East LA Society of Film & Arts (TELASOFA) in 2005, a nonprofit which heals children and their families through art and film. Three years later he also started the East LA Film Festival (ELAFF) where youth could showcase their films alongside Hollywood professionals. After 14 years, ELAFF has grown with the help of the East LA community screening films from Australia, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Mexico, USA and his beloved East LA. Juan directed the award-winning short film “Marisol”, based on a true story about a little girl from East LA who dreams of the perfect quinceañera dress until her life takes a drastic turn after an incident with domestic violence. The film too the “Arts and Culture Award” from the East LA Women’s Center, Hollywood Reel Independent Festival “Best Drama” and qualified for the Oscars in 2018. The script is now in the OSCARS ACADEMY Margaret Herrick Library available for research to filmmakers and the public. Juan continues to work with young adults with a grant from Eastside Arts Initiative to provide internships on projects produced by TELASOFA. One of his next projects is BLAXICAN, about an aged out foster youth dealing with generational trauma. He is also in pre-production for CRY LADY, CRY! A film about professional mourners called moirologists.
Closing night is Saturday October 2nd with the screening of the feature film “Lorelei” directed by Sabrina Doyle. A working-class fable about a biker, a mermaid and three shades of blue starring Jena Malone and Pablo Schreiber. Directly after the screening, there will be a question and answer with Sabrina Doyle, Writer/Director, Stephen Paar, Cinematographer and Arnold and Jianulla Zimmerman, Executive Producers who will be in attendance.
Awards will be held directly after the screening. Awards will be given for Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short, Best Cinematography, Best Musical Composition, Audience Awards and Honorable Mentions.

Out Of The Dark: Tessie Dong Brings Light To Glendale
87-year-old Chinese American artist exhibits monumental work in MONA’s windows featuring hand crafted stained glass, metal, and neon.
One of my favorite ladies on the planet, Tessie Dong has a window over at MONA, the Museum of Neon Art, in Glendale. Please check out her beautiful work and what MONA says…
Glendale, CA Artist Tessie Dong and the Museum of Neon Art were planning to display the artist's monumental and delicate work in summer of 2020. Due to the pandemic, the exhibition of work by the 87-year-old artist was postponed until now, when visitors can enjoy the delicately handcrafted screen for free from the windows. Tessie Dong has been an artist all her life. “I've wanted to be an artist since I was in the first grade in China,” states Dong. Since the 1970’s Tessie Dong has created multimedia artworks ranging in scale from a few inches to up to 40 feet with materials such as steel rods, patinated sheet metal, paint, stained glass, textile, and neon. Tessie states, “I was working for a lot of banks creating woven pieces that were 40 feet long.To add dimension I proposed creating a welded metal structure to an architect with lace like metal and they approved it, when I got home I thought- what have I done? I realized I had to teach myself how to weld so I bought a welder and got to work.” Through her work in metalwork and neon, Dong creates elegant and rhythmic compositions that play with weight, delicacy, and light. The screen and chair that are displayed in the Museum of Neon Art’s windows are composed of undulating curves and circles that unify but also complicate the composition that contains stained glass, hand bent, and blown neon glass.
Tessie Dong was born in Canton, China. She moved to Arizona as a teenager and received an Associates of Art from Eastern Arizona College and later moved to Los Angeles for further study. She received her education at Art Center College of Design, specializing in commercial illustration. After photography grew in prominence as an advertising medium, Dong pivoted from illustrator to work in architectural model building. This attention to space and proximity to architects led her to propose monumental works, designed with architecture in mind. She conceived of and created large-scale architectural installations for banks, restaurants, tennis clubs, private homes and synagogues. The mediums she used ranged from batik canvases, painted dimensional murals, and multimedia sculptures. She is a skillful welder and glassblower who hand makes each element in her work, embracing the transformative capacities of color, light, and material. “I had to learn how to bend neon tubes in order to add them to my metal work so it's integrated in the whole,” states Dong. Dong’s 20-foot tower Enlightenment is permanently installed at the Chinatown branch of the LA Public Library.
The second degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, avid gardener, and artist states “I keep on going.” Several years ago Tessie Dong was offered a large art commision the same week that she was diagnosed with cancer. The artist pushed through with the commission, secretly battling her diagnosis through studio sessions, chemotherapy, radiation, and naps. Every day she would move towards completing the work, promising herself she would not die before it was finished. “I almost died of cancer, but designing and completing my 24' x 6’ x 2’ wall sculpture helped me to survive,” states Dong. The artist has been cancer free since.
Dong states, “My work is about interplay of space and form, of natural lines and industrial materials, of harmony and tension- it's sometimes hard to delineate where my pieces start and stop and where work and life intersect. There is nothing about my world that is not part of a vast composition: My garden, my house, my studio, my life. They reflect the same symbiosis of organic chance and composition which typifies my evolving work.” Tessie Dong’s work has been exhibited internationally and she has participated in several museum exhibitions. Her work is held in various private and corporate collections.
“My art is a continual process. My goal is to design and create multi-media works for public and private spaces to enhance human communication through artistic media. I grow with each project and then apply my extended experience to each future work,” says Dong.
“Tessie Dong’s work bursts with vitality and elegance. Though she often uses industrial materials, she subverts expectations of the materials she uses. We waited a year to share Tessie’s work and it was well worth the wait,” states MONA Executive Director Corrie Siegel.
Though the work can be seen and appreciated all day long, the best time to see it is at dusk or after nightfall. The exhibition will be on view until December of 2021.
It's June and the City is Reopening!
Traffic is back. I just picked up a to-go order at an almost full restaurant. What I am truly looking forward to is less mask wearing, more hugging, sharing close spaces (with friends, not sure about strangers yet.) I look forward to more options and opportunities to see art and hear music. To share food and experiences with friends. Art openings…museums…I’ll be there. So please allow me to share some of the things I find interesting to go see and do. And of course go over to Poet’s Place and check out the offerings from Linda and her fabulous group of poets.
